New research* reveals that ethical accountability and purpose-led leadership are rapidly moving from an HR focus to an organisational priority. More than three quarters of UK business leaders are calling for formal, measurable commitments to ethical and social responsibility over the next decade.
The findings show that purpose is seen as directly linked to long-term talent attraction, retention and business competitiveness as organisations navigate AI adoption, workforce transformation and shifting societal expectations.
Key findings from the data include:
Technology teams are leading the ethics charge: Technology leaders are driving the need for human-first leadership with 82% backing measurable ethical commitments, compared with 79% in HR and 73% in finance. The technology function’s proximity to AI, data privacy and digital transformation is accelerating their ethics agenda.
Purpose-led leadership is worth the investment: 75% of leaders say a strong company purpose, for example social impact, will be a primary driver of talent attraction and retention. Alongside this, a company’s reputation for sustainability and ethical practices is identified as one of the most effective recruitment factors (28%).
Businesses must empower employees to own the company culture: 81% of business leaders believe future retention strategies must give employees a genuine sense of ownership, whether this is financial or creative, in their organisation’s output. This marks the need to shift from traditional hierarchical leadership models towards a more collaborative approach to leadership.
Anton Roe, CEO at MHR, said: “Business leadership is at a crossroads. We’re seeing some organisations starting to deprioritise their people, despite it being the human workforce that has got them to where they are today. The data paints a clear call to action – ethical and purpose-led leadership are not just words HR uses to show people it cares, they’re strategic levers that businesses must pull to attract and retain talent, build trust with the workforce, and sustain productivity and performance.”
