2020 brought turmoil for everybody. But as many have rightfully stated, whilst we were all in the same storm, we were most definitely not all in the same boat

Individuals from marginalised or disadvantaged groups such as LGBTQ+ and underrepresented communities who already experience poorer outcomes in healthcare were disproportionately affected by the pandemic in ways that other areas of society were not. This, coupled with the racial injustice that led to the rise of the Black Lives Matter movement, meant that racially and ethnically diverse people experienced deep trauma.

2020 also inordinately affected women. Systemic gender inequalities that led to the “she-cession” of women in the workforce meant that women were under more stress than men.

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion have always been at the heart of Adtalem Global Education’s mission, but these events meant that building an anti-racist organisation that stands for equality and social justice was more important than ever.

Read on to find out how Adtalem built an actively anti-racist company culture, created equitable and measurable internal initiatives to support diversity and inclusion and designed a system for professional development that allows all employees to reach their career goals and foster diversity in its leadership team and board of directors.

“We believe that inclusion needs to be intentional and that diversity starts at the top.”
