Managing Director, Human Capital

Let’s face it – the hardest part about engagement is not measuring it, it is deciding what to do about the results of listening. One of the more effective approaches I have seen to address engagement opportunities is one where company leadership evaluated engagement data, decided what opportunities to focus on without trying to do everything, and passed on engagement “challenges” to individual groups of high-performers. These groups, made up of no more than 10 people with a leader sponsor and an organization effectiveness expert would ultimately decide the solution to address the engagement challenge. Once implemented, the high-performers provided a way for employees to react real-time and give active feedback so approaches could be modified or reinforced. These assignments resulted in pride in the project, broader ownership of employee engagement at an issue level, and passion projects that would meaningfully and thoughtfully address an engagement challenge. There were no parameters and high-performers were encourage to think without limits, with the support of the leader sponsor and organization expert.

The types of engagement challenges that the teams solutioned were as fundamental as the manager to employee relationship to brainstorming workplace flexibility options. The key takeaway from this approach is some of the best thinking comes from the people in the business. We should collaborate, partner and build solutions that matter to elevate the employee experience. Also at the most fundamental level, engagement is not a HR issue, it is a business issue. It is critical that we think creatively and flexibly to support our most important asset – our people.
