More and more companies are taking a greater responsibility for the health and wellbeing of their employees. But when you are worried about a colleague’s mental health it can be difficult to know the right way to support them without overstepping boundaries or putting either of you at risk.

Amy Gallo has outlined 6 ways to help. Tips include: avoid diagnosing them, know your limits, and don’t be their de-facto therapist.

Know your limits

Think about whether you are the right person to say anything to them. If it’s a close colleague or someone who works under you it may be ok to broach the subject.

Pro Tip: Get support from others (your boss or HR) if you feel the person is in danger or your job is at risk.

Don’t be their de-facto therapist

If someone keeps coming back to you for help and advice say “Thanks for relaying this but I’m not an expert”
